MAKKAH – Sheikh Yasir Ad Dawsary steps down as Imam of Masjid Al Haram at the end of his four-year contract, sparking speculation about the renewal of the Imam’s contract and the future of Masjid Al Haram.
Sheikh Yasir Ad Dawsary’s role as Imam and Khatib of Masjid Al Haram marks the end of his four-year contract with the General Presidency of Religious Affairs.
Sheikh was appointed to the esteemed position of Guest Imam for Taraweeh prayers in 2015. His position was renewed annually, considering his spiritual leadership and impact on the community, until 2019 when he had the honor of becoming a permanent Imam.
In 2019, the new rules of appointment and dismissal of the Imam stated that the Imams of the two Holy Mosques will sign a four-year contract with the General Presidency for Religious Affairs, which can be renewed.
Given the policy of contract renewal, questions have been raised about the fact that the other two Imams along with Sheikh Yasir Ad Dawsary didn’t get their contracts renewed after the completion of 4 years. However, Inside the Haramain reports that there is still a possibility for the Imams to get their contracts renewed.
However, the General Presidency of Religious Affairs has chosen to remain silent on the matter, neither confirming nor denying the news regarding the renewal of the contracts.
This change in Masjid al-Haram is important for the entire Muslim Ummah who hold this holy site in high esteem.
