The incidents, predominantly verbal aggression, often targeted Muslim women wearing veils or niqabs. Notably, all women interviewed wearing niqabs reported Islamophobic experiences.

The survey, which included 299 participants, also found a decrease in witnessed incidents, from 34% in 2022 to 29% in 2023. The highest recorded victim rate was in 2020, at 45%.

In 2022, 5% of respondents experienced physical violence due to their faith, dropping to 1% in 2023. Verbal attacks were most common in workplaces, educational institutions, social media, and public spaces.

An Islamophobic sticker found on the Le Juste Milieu mosque in Bonnevoie in February 2024 highlights ongoing tensions, with an investigation currently underway.

Despite these incidents, 77% of surveyed Muslims felt safe in Luxembourg, with 64% feels less discriminated against compared to neighboring countries.

  1. Instances of harassment and bullying directed at Muslims are unfortunately prevalent in various non-Muslim nations. It appears that the global media may be exhibiting bias against Muslims and contributing to the negative portrayal of the community. I find myself contemplating why there hasn’t been an effort by Muslims to establish their own media presence in European countries in order to address these unfair representations. Despite a significant Muslim population in the US and European countries, there seems to be a lack of collective action to address the discrimination they face. Furthermore, there appears to be a subdued response to the challenges faced by Muslims in ostensibly secular or non-Muslim nations. It is regrettable to note that although Muslims possess the necessary resources, there seems to be a lack of effective organisation and attention to politically motivated issues. While Islam promotes peace, it also advocates for the resistance to injustice. It is noteworthy that in the history of Islam, Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) engaged in several battles against oppressors, which indicates a balanced approach that encompasses peaceful resolution and necessary resistance. Educated young Muslims should initiate systematic and persistent action as a mission through the media houses and also initiate court cases to discourage offenders from indulging in unnecessary maligning of Muslims.
