MAKKAH – Sheikh Yasser Al-Dosari has been appointed as the Khateeb of Masjid Al Haram. This appointment is a great honor for him and the Muslim community.
Khateebs are Muslims who deliver the sermon (khutbah) at Friday prayers and Eid prayers.
Usually, the khateeb is the prayer leader (imam), but different people can fill the two roles. Although there are no requirements for becoming a khatib other than being an adult Muslim, the khatib should know how to lead the prayer and deliver the speech (khutba). Women have led Friday prayers in several places, despite some Muslims believing that the khatib must be a man.
In his role as Khateeb of Masjid Al Haram, Sheikh Yasser Al-Dosari will have the privilege of delivering Jumu’ah and Eid prayers in one of the holiest places of worship in the world. He will also moderate sermons, lectures, and other programs throughout the year.
It is an opportunity for the Muslim community to have a prominent leader represent them in one of the most critical places in their faith. Congratulations to Sheikh Yasser Al-Dosari on this great honor, and best wishes for his new position.
