Is It Permissible to Lie About Salary?

Lying is not allowed in Islam, and this includes lying about one’s salary. Being truthful is a must. Lying is typically seen as a sign of dishonesty. The ones who lie will face punishment from Allah.

Evidence

  • The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that a hypocrite is known for lying, breaking promises, and betraying trust. (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2631). This hadith is also found in al-Bukhari and Islam and highlights the importance of being honest.
  • Additionally, Ibn Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said that lying is wrong, whether serious or in jest. (Sunan Ibn Majah 46).

Bottom Line

If sharing one’s salary could lead to harm, it’s okay to keep it private. One can refuse to share the exact amount politely or give a vague response. The goal is to avoid lying while safeguarding personal interests without going against Islamic values.

And Allah knows best.
