Starting February 1, 2025, everyone planning to perform Umrah will need to get vaccinated against meningitis, no matter what type of visa they have.
UPDATE:
This step has been taken to protect pilgrims and others from the risk of meningitis, a serious infection that can spread quickly in crowded places like the holy sites.
What You Need to Know About the Vaccine:
- What is the vaccine? It’s a special vaccine called the Quadrivalent Meningitis Vaccine, which protects against four types of meningitis.
- When should you get it? You must get the vaccine at least 10 days before traveling.
- How long does the vaccine last?
- If you get the Polysaccharide Vaccine, it must be less than 3 years old.
- If you get the Conjugate Vaccine, it must be less than 5 years old.
Why Is This Vaccine Important?
Meningitis is a dangerous infection that affects the brain and spinal cord. It spreads easily in crowded areas, like during Umrah, where millions of people gather from all over the world. Saudi Arabia has made this vaccine mandatory to ensure the safety of pilgrims and prevent any outbreaks during the pilgrimage.
What Should Pilgrims Do?
- Visit your doctor or a vaccination center and ask for the meningitis vaccine.
- Make sure you get the vaccine at least 10 days before your trip.
- Get a certificate to prove you’ve been vaccinated, as you’ll need to show it when traveling.
For more information, contact your airline or travel agent to ensure you meet all the requirements.
By getting vaccinated, you’ll not only protect yourself but also help keep everyone safe during this spiritual journey.
