Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse to Appear During Ramadan 2025

Celestial spectacle coincides with holy month on March 13 or 14 in 2025.
Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse

A rare total lunar eclipse, known as a “Blood Moon,” will illuminate the night sky in the middle of Ramadan 2025.

The first globally visible total lunar eclipse since 2022, will cast the full Moon into Earth’s shadow, transforming its glow into a striking reddish hue.

Eclipse Timeline and Visibility

  • Eclipse Concludes: ~10:00 UTC
  • Penumbral Phase Begins: 03:57 UTC (March 14)
  • Partial Eclipse Starts: 05:09 UTC
  • Total Eclipse (Totality): 06:26–07:31 UTC (66 minutes)

Countries that can see Blood Moon in March 2025:

Full View

North and South America, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile, will witness the entire eclipse.

Partial View

Europe: United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Germany will see the Moon set during the eclipse.

Africa: Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, and Tunisia will catch the early phases before moonset.

Australia and Northeast Asia: Japan, South Korea, and eastern China will observe the eclipse during moonrise.

North Africa: Countries like Morocco, Algeria, and Egypt will experience partial visibility as the Moon dips below the horizon during the early stages of the eclipse.

Most Arab nations, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and Iraq, will not witness the totality phase. The Moon will set before the eclipse reaches its peak (around sunrise local time). Observers may see only the initial penumbral or partial phases before moonset.

Reason Behind the “Blood Moon”

During totality, sunlight filtering through Earth’s atmosphere bends (a process called Rayleigh scattering), stripping out blue wavelengths and bathing the Moon in deep red tones.

This phenomenon occurs only when the Moon passes entirely through Earth’s umbral shadow—a celestial alignment not seen globally in over two years.

Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection for Muslims worldwide, emphasizes contemplation of creation and the divine. Scholars note that lunar eclipses hold spiritual significance in Islamic tradition, often inspiring communal prayers (Salat al-Khusuf).

  • No Equipment Needed: Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to view with the naked eye.
  • Best Observing Times: Observers in the Americas should watch between 06:26 and 07:31 UTC for peak redness.
  • Virtual Options: Live streams will be available for regions with limited visibility.

This eclipse marks the first of three total lunar eclipses forecast between 2025 and 2026, with others occurring in September 2025 and March 2026.
