On April 22, 2024, a minaret of the historic Bademlik Mosque collapsed due to strong winds. The mosque is located in the province of Izmir on the western side. Bademlik Mosque was built in the 16th century and is a historic landmark in Turkey that attracts worshippers and tourists.

The Collapse

Standing tall for hundreds of years, the minaret finally gives up in front of the strong gust winds, causing a loud noise as the debris is scattered all over the surrounding areas including the mosque’s courtyard.

The winds were said to be around 100 km/h, which is unusual for this region.

The Imam of the mosque who was inside when the minaret fell says that the collapse of the market has damaged the infrastructure of the mosque.

Emergency services were engaged to ensure the safety of the residents and the tourists visiting the area. The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism promised the reconstruction of the minaret.
