Fatima, who died in the blast, was laid to rest near her family’s home in the Bekaa region, eastern Lebanon. A funeral video showed her aunt in tears, bidding a heartbreaking farewell to the young girl.
The New York Times reported that Fatima’s aunt, Zeinab Mousawi, said the 9-year-old had just returned from her first day of fourth grade shortly before the attack occurred.
Lebanese Health Minister Firas Al-Abiad confirmed that 2,800 people were injured, with 300 in critical condition.
At the funeral in Saraain, Fatima’s schoolmates were visibly shocked, attending the funeral of someone their own age who had died in such a tragic way.
The Huffington Post described Fatima’s mother, overwhelmed with grief, walking beside her daughter’s small coffin. Dressed in black and wearing a yellow Hezbollah scarf, she mourned deeply for her loss.
According to her aunt, Fatima was in the kitchen when the pager on the table started beeping. As she picked it up to give it to her father, it exploded, severely injuring her. The blast left the room covered in blood, with devastating injuries to Fatima’s face.
