This year, congregational Taraweeh prayers in Ramadan 2025, will consist of 10 Rakats at both the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina.

Traditionally, prior to the global health crisis, worshipers at the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque typically participated in 20 Rakats of Taraweeh. However, recent years have seen adjustments to this practice. In response to pandemic conditions, and as a precautionary measure to safeguard public health, the number of Rakats was reduced to 10 at both holy sites.

Further details and official guidance such as Imams who will lead the Taraweeh prayer have been released.

The decision to offer 10 rakats of Taraweeh, followed by 3 rakats of witr, this marks a shift from the more common 20-rakat Taraweeh observed in many mosques worldwide.

The shorter Taraweeh format is expected to create a more focused and spiritually uplifting environment, allowing worshipers to engage deeply in prayer and Quranic recitation. The Grand Mosque and Masjid an-Nabawi’s renowned imams will lead the prayers, with their melodious recitations broadcast globally for those unable to attend in person.
