Makkah, Saudi Arabia — Sheikh Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Sudais, President of the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, has issued a decision appointing Sheikh Saleh Al Humaid as the Chief of Imams of Masjid Al Haram in Makkah.
Sheikh Saleh Al Humaid, a distinguished scholar and long-serving imam at Masjid Al Haram, brings decades of experience and deep spiritual insight to his new role.
Responsibilities of the Chief of Imams
As Chief of Imams, Sheikh Al Humaid will oversee:
- Prayer Leadership: Coordinating the rotation of imams for daily prayers, Taraweeh, and special occasions like Hajj and Ramadan.
- Spiritual Guidance: Delivering sermons and lectures that address contemporary issues while rooted in Islamic teachings.
- Imam Training: Mentoring and developing the next generation of imams to uphold the mosque’s legacy of excellence.
- Community Engagement: Strengthening ties with pilgrims and visitors through educational programs and outreach initiatives.
Sheikh Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid was born in Buraidah, Qassim Province, Saudi Arabia, in 1950. He began his schooling in Buraidah and later moved to Makkah for high school.
After that, he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Islamic Jurisprudence at King Abdul Aziz University in Makkah, followed by a PhD from Umm Al-Qura University.
He took on several academic positions at Umm Al-Qura University—like lecturer, dean, and director—but there’s no record of honors from his alma mater.
In 2016, he received the King Faisal International Prize for Service to Islam. His work includes serving as Senior Imam of the Grand Mosque in Makkah (starting in 1984), leading the Shura Council (2002–2008), and heading the Supreme Judicial Council (2009–2011).
He has written more than a dozen books on Islamic jurisprudence and dawah, and some have been translated into other languages.
