As reported by the Times Of India, an altercation broke out in Bhirpur village in Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi district where a mob beat a Muslim youth to death on Monday local time.
Based on the first information report (FIR) that has been lodged against the mob, it was identified that the victim who was killed was named Zafar Alam, 18 years old, a resident of the village of Asrauli. Meanwhile, his brother Noor, who tried to fight for his brother’s life, was seriously injured and had to be rushed to a local hospital.
According to Aditya Vikram Singh of Pipri Police Station, under whose jurisdiction of Bhirpur village falls, the ill-fated incident occurred around 10 am, on Monday 21 March.
The police explained that Zafar Alam often visited the village to meet a girl from the Kori community. However, the girl’s parents said that the villagers of Bhirpur have several times warned Zafar not to visit the village to meet the girl.
Despite the interdiction, Zafar rides his motorbike to the village on Monday. It is quickly enraged the residents who then began to chase him. While trying to flee, Zafar managed to contact his older brother Noor, who was not far from the village who then rushed to safe him.
When Zafar fled, he had time to defend himself by shooting villagers with a Katta (country-made pistol). Unfortunately, he ran out of bullets, then he was caught and beaten by the mob to death. The mob also beat Noor who came to help until he was battered.
Singh explained that when he got a report of the incident, the police quickly rushed to the scene. Officers from the Pipri station then called personnel from three other stations to provide backup.
When taken to the hospital, Zafar’s life could not be saved, he was pronounced dead. Meanwhile, his brother suffered serious injuries and is currently receiving intensive treatment.
Picket police have been deployed to maintain law and order in Bhirpur village.
Inspector Singh confirmed that at this time police are still investigating and putting together the exact time of the incident to corroborate any evidence of the incident.
