Dr Abu Mustafa Zakaria told MusLitFest 2026 that humans are a special creation, not the end of the hominin line. Here is his argument.

Are humans the product of evolution? Dr Abu Mustafa Zakaria answered no at the Muslim Literature Festival (MusLitFest 2026), arguing that Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) was a miraculous creation. The Discussion Circles channel published a video of the talk on October 18, 2026.

Dr Zakaria is a medical doctor with a doctorate in protein science. He is also an Islamic youth worker and the author of a book that grew out of teaching his own children and children in his community.

He said he reached his view by checking the science himself. In his words, many Muslim scholars who accept evolution treat Darwinian theory as proven first and then try to fit Islam around it.

Why He Says Prophet Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) Was a Special Creation

Dr Zakaria began with two lenses. Allah acts with purpose and full control, and everything in creation is a sign that points back to Him. He also named three kinds of evidence: revelation, reason and the scientific method.

He pointed to the Quranic verse about humanity being created from a single soul in Surah An-Nisa. He also cited the verse saying man’s creation began from clay and that his offspring came later from a humble fluid. In his reading, this means the first man was not born through reproduction.

He added the verse in which Allah asks Iblis what stopped him from bowing to what He created “with My two hands”. Dr Zakaria said this shows how personal Adam’s creation was.

On the fossils, he described the hominin series as a line of ape-like fossils that grow more human-like. He said Yasir Qadhi and Nazir Khan compare it to a chain of dominoes. Adam stands at the end of the chain but is not part of it, and only revelation tells us so.

He said Francis Collins, who led the Human Genome Project, saw a risk of “great deception” in that picture and concluded humans are a product of evolution. Dr Zakaria accepted the domino view but asked why Allah would make it look that way.

His answer is that the gap itself is the sign. He said human intelligence differs in kind from animal intelligence, not just in degree.

He gave an example from his youngest daughter. Before she was 500 days old she had worked out the fingerprint pad on his phone. Around age two she asked why her sister had pinched her, which he called a deeper kind of thinking.

He also quoted the theologian John Haught’s comparison. A chimpanzee cracking a nut with a stone is not the same as an international team building the Large Hadron Collider. Primates have had opposable thumbs as long as humans, he said, yet none has built vehicles, invented writing, made metal-tipped tools or lit a fire.

If the evolutionary line had simply continued, he argued, it would have ended in another animal with no fire and no complex tools. He concluded that humans are a miraculous creation by both reason and revelation.

His Objections to Darwinian Theory

Dr Zakaria said he found 14 serious flaws in neo-Darwinian theory, which rests on random mutation and natural selection. He gave two examples.

The first was a wolf pup born with a 5% speed advantage. Newborn pups are as vulnerable as any others, he said, so that edge would not help them survive. Darwin’s own idea of small steps, in his view, does not fit what happens at birth.

He noted that animal populations stay stable. An elephant has about five offspring in a lifetime, and a mouse has about 35 in a year, yet only two of each survive to replace the parents. He said Darwinian scientists calculate from stable populations and do not explain how a new trait gets started.

The second was meiosis. Each parent passes on half its genes, so he said there is a 50% chance a “magic gene” is not passed to the next generation at all.

From this he concluded that the science points to a Creator who protects, nurtures and sustains life. He described this as a rational reading of the science, not a matter of faith.

He closed by saying his children need two foundations before they learn how to pray: there is a God, and Islam is the right religion. He said his study of evolution led him to both.

Neanderthals and Other Questions From the Audience

Asked where Neanderthals fit, Dr Zakaria said “human” does not have to mean Homo sapiens. He listed the markers he would look for: fire, tools, burial, art, clothing and boats to reach remote islands.

By those markers, he said, Neanderthals may count as human. He added that Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) could have come before Homo sapiens. He also said pictures of Neanderthals as cavemen are artists’ impressions.

One audience member asked how intelligence can be measured. He said it cannot be measured directly, and that brain size relative to body size is not a reliable marker. Instead, he said, you look at what animals can actually do.

He cited the Quranic account of the ant warning the others about Prophet Sulaiman (peace be upon him). In his reading, animals communicate but only about survival.

On cell biology, he told the audience to watch the WEHI TV animations of protein production and DNA replication. He said the complexity is mind-blowing.

He also mentioned Denis Noble, a physiologist known for heart muscle research. Dr Zakaria said Noble calls Darwinian theory incorrect and wants an alternative. He said he does not know whether Noble is a believer.

Asked about race and anthropology, he said he did not look into it. He said Darwin’s book Descent of Man raises questions on race, and that these ideas have been misused.

When an audience member said he was mixing science with faith, he agreed his view is not pure science. He said questions about the origin of life and the universe need rational thinking alongside science. He also said science relates to God in several ways, first as the source of the natural laws and second through the sheer complexity of biology.
