Makkah, Saudi Arabia — The Mataf expansion project at the Grand Mosque in Makkah has been finalized and declared fully operational ahead of Ramadan, with enhanced infrastructure designed to accommodate up to 107,000 pilgrims per hour — a significant increase of 10,000 worshipers compared to previous years.
The project, spanning 12,350 square meters, underwent a comprehensive inspection by Prince Saud bin Mishal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Deputy Governor of the Makkah Region, who emphasized its readiness to ensure a seamless experience during the holy month.
Key Upgrades and Structural Enhancements
The expansion includes state-of-the-art architectural and functional improvements to streamline pilgrim movement and safety:
- Updated lighting and cladding on minarets to complement the Grand Mosque’s iconic visual identity.
- Modernized exterior designs blending traditional Islamic aesthetics with advanced materials.
- Reinforced structures to support increased foot traffic while maintaining open sight lines for Tawaf (circumambulating).
- Durable, ergonomic railings installed to enhance safety for worshipers on elevated levels.
- Energy-efficient LED systems ensuring consistent illumination across the Mataf area.
With the expanded Mataf now capable of hosting 107,000 pilgrims hourly, authorities aim to reduce congestion during peak Ramadan nights. Advanced crowd-control technologies, including AI-driven monitoring and real-time guidance systems, will further optimize flow between the Mataf, Sa’i (Safa-Marwah), and prayer areas.
Prince Saud bin Mishal toured the site to assess the project’s compliance with safety and operational standards. He praised the integration of traditional design elements with modern engineering. The Deputy Emir also reviewed emergency protocols and health facilities, ensuring readiness for Ramadan’s anticipated influx.
