A mother and her son from Kano State have died in a road accident just 13 days before the 2026 Hajj airlift, the Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board confirmed on Tuesday, April 21.
The two victims — Alkasim Ibrahim Walawa, 48, and his mother Hadiza Garba, 73 — were both registered members of Kano’s 2026 Hajj contingent. They had completed all travel requirements, including obtaining their Hajj visas to travel to Saudi Arabia for this year’s pilgrimage.
The Crash
The accident took place on the Rimin Gado–Kano City road, less than 10 kilometres from the Kano metropolis. Both died at the scene.

Alkasim and Hadiza were from Walawa Village in Kabo Local Government Area of Kano State. Alkasim is survived by two wives and seven children. His mother leaves behind five children.
Board’s Response
Board spokesperson Sulaiman A. Dederi said the deaths were deeply painful given what the two were preparing for.
“Their passing is particularly heartbreaking as they were on a noble journey with the intention of traveling to the Holy Land for pilgrimage this year,” Dederi said in a statement.
The board prayed for Allah to forgive the deceased and grant them eternal rest in jannatul Firdaus. Condolences were extended to both families.
Airlift Still on Track
The Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board has finished vaccinations and is preparing to distribute the Basic Travelling Allocation (BTA) to registered pilgrims. The airlift of over 3,000 Kano pilgrims is scheduled to begin in the first week of May 2026, with their destination being Masjid al-Haram (Grand Mosque).
