Key Takeaways

  • Saudi Arabia’s Public Health Authority (Weqaya) places the risk of Hantavirus entering the Kingdom at “very low”
  • The outbreak originated on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean — three people died, including a Dutch couple and a German national
  • Pilgrims and summer travellers are advised to follow general health precautions, not to panic

Hajj 2026 pilgrims have no cause for concern over Hantavirus, according to Saudi Arabia’s Public Health Authority (Weqaya).

The authority placed the risk of the virus entering the Kingdom at “very low,” pointing to the country’s existing health infrastructure as a reliable barrier against any potential spread.

The concern followed an outbreak on a cruise ship, the MV Hondius, which resulted in the deaths of three passengers — a Dutch couple and a German national.

Countries around the world moved quickly to track those who had disembarked before the virus was detected, along with anyone who had close contact with them.

Weqaya confirmed it is closely monitoring developments in coordination with international health organisations, and that current assessments place the risk level as low, with a very low probability of the virus entering Saudi Arabia.

The authority credited the Kingdom’s early warning channels, epidemiological surveillance tools, food safety monitoring systems, environmental public health controls, border monitoring measures, and preventive procedures already in place across the country.

Human-to-human transmission is uncommon and has only been observed in limited cases involving specific strains and prolonged close contact.

There is currently no licensed treatment for Hantavirus, which can carry a fatality rate of up to 50 percent.
