Life throws hard choices at you. Take this job or wait for something better. Marry this person or say no. Move to a new city or stay where you are. Your mind spins. Every option has risks. You pray istikharah but still feel unsure.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught his cousin Ali Ibn Abi Talib (R.A) a short dua that cuts through the confusion.
Dua For Right Decision
This supplication is recorded in Sahih Muslim 2725a (Book 48, Hadith 104). The Prophet (ﷺ) said to Ali (RA): “Say: Allahumma ihdini wa saddidni.”

Arabic:
اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِنِي وَسَدِّدْنِي
Transliteration:
Allahumma ihdini wa saddidni
Meaning:
O Allah, direct me to the right path and make me adhere to the straight path.
This dua was taught by Prophet (PBUH) to Ali Ibn Abi Talib (R.A). He did not give a long list of requests. He gave two words that cover everything.
At the time, He would need to make countless decisions as a leader, a judge, and a husband. This short prayer became his anchor. It can become yours too.
How many times should you recite this dua?
- There is no fixed number set by the Prophet ﷺ.
- Recite this dua frequently and consistently whenever you face a decision, big or small.
- Choose times when duas are most likely answered, like the last third of the night or at the time of Adhan.
