Dua For Graveyard – When Visiting

Dua for graveyard, this dua is a must recite especially when you’re visiting a graveyard.

In Islamic teachings, we are strongly encouraged in the Hadith to visit the graveyard, recite dua for our departed relatives, and take lessons from our death and the present transient world and eternal life of the Hereafter that awaits us.

Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said visiting graves would weaken our attachment to this world and remind us more of the Hereafter.

In practice, visiting graves is often interpreted as a strong statement that the deceased has not been forgotten even though they have died. When visiting graves, Muslims are encouraged to pause for a moment to remember the good things in the deceased’s life. The time should be spent praying and contemplating the mercy and goodness of God and the brevity of life on this earth.

In addition to bringing benefits to visitors, visiting graves is also beneficial for the deceased we visit. The deceased will benefit if visitors treat him well, greet him with greetings, make dua for him, and pray for forgiveness.

Besides encouraging us to visit graves, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also teaches us about the etiquette of visiting graves.

It is sunnah by Rasulullah SAW to face towards the Qibla while reciting this dua.

Dua for Graveyard

First of all, Muslims are encouraged to make wudhu before entering the graves to be physically clean as we will read the Quran and recite dua to relatives who have died when visiting graveyards. We are also strongly encouraged to enter it with the right food and make Salaam to the deceased.

After Salaam, we can recite dua for visiting graveyards, as exemplified by our Beloved Prophet (PBUH).

It is sunnah to pray for the deceased, make dua seeking forgiveness for them, the elevation of their status, asking AllahTa’alaa to reward them from His mercy and grant them the best of rewards, make dua for death on Iman, steadfastness on Deen, and being blessed with a good death, etc.

After reciting dua, recite some portion of theQur’ann Shareef in a soft tone. Some of the recommended Surahs are: Surah Yaseen, Surah Mulk, Surah Zil Zaal, Surah Takaathur, Surah Ikhlas, Ayatul Kursi, Surah Fatihah and the opening 5 verses and the last 3 verses of Surah Baqarah. Recite Surah Ikhlas 3, 7, 10 or 11 times.
