Muslim surgeon Dr Amer Raza has reached a new milestone in the United Kingdom after his single-port robotic surgery programme at Cromwell Hospital in London surpassed 400 procedures.
Dr Raza, a consultant gynaecologist specialising in endometriosis and robotic surgery, has led the programme as it expanded from routine gynaecological procedures to complex operations involving severe endometriosis.
Single-port robotic surgery allows surgeons to use a camera and multiple robotic instruments through one abdominal entry point. This differs from conventional robotic surgery, which generally requires several small incisions.

The Cromwell Hospital programme has also become a training centre for surgeons interested in the technique. More than 100 surgeons from the UK and abroad have visited the centre to observe complex procedures and learn about single-port robotic gynaecological surgery.
Dr Raza has received two Master Surgeon accreditations from the US-based Surgical Review Corporation for Robotic Surgery and Advanced Endometriosis Care. The accreditations followed an external review covering areas including surgical practice, patient outcomes, complications, governance and standards of care.
His latest achievement follows another record set around three years ago, when Dr Raza led a team performing complex robotic operations for patients with endometriosis at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London. The team carried out 12 major gynaecological operations in a single day as part of a two-day surgical programme.

Endometriosis can cause severe pelvic and menstrual pain and may affect fertility and quality of life. In more advanced cases, the disease can involve areas such as the bowel, bladder, urinary tract, nerves and, in some cases, the diaphragm.
Dr Raza’s specialist work includes complex endometriosis surgery as well as robotic hysterectomy, myomectomy and other advanced gynaecological procedures. He has also emphasised that treating complex endometriosis involves more than surgery, with pain management, fertility, recovery, psychological wellbeing and long-term patient support also forming part of care.
Originally trained in Pakistan, Dr Raza has worked in the UK for more than 25 years. His professional work has focused on advanced endometriosis treatment, minimally invasive surgery and robotic surgery.
He continues to maintain professional links with Pakistan and regularly travels there to support patients and medical professionals. He has also spoken about plans to work with partners in Pakistan to help introduce advanced robotic surgical techniques and share specialist medical knowledge.
Dr Raza has said that he wants to support the next generation of surgeons while increasing awareness of endometriosis and strengthening cooperation between medical professionals in Pakistan, the UK and internationally.
