  • Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are now on California’s official state holiday calendar.
  • Public schools and community colleges may close, and eligible state employees may get holiday credit.

California has officially recognized Eid al-Fitr, the two major Islamic holidays. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 2017 into law on Sunday, adding both occasions to the state’s official holiday calendar.

Under the law, public schools and community colleges may close on both holidays. They can do this through their existing local procedures. Eligible state employees may also receive holiday credit for the two occasions.

Eid al-Fitr comes at the end of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting. Eid al-Adha is observed during the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

The law treats the designation as a calendar decision. It reads: “The designation of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as state holidays is a civil calendar determination that acknowledges their cultural significance to California communities.”
