Massive crowds of pilgrims flooded into Mina early Wednesday morning, marking the 8th of Dhu al-Hijjah, known as the Day of Tarwiyah, the first official day of Hajj 2025. This significant step signals the start of the five-day pilgrimage, with nearly two million Muslims participating this year.
Pilgrims will remain overnight in Mina before moving to Mount Arafat on Thursday for the most crucial day of Hajj. Despite the spiritual atmosphere, the conditions remain extremely challenging, with temperatures in Makkah and Mina expected to soar beyond 40°C (104°F).
To prevent a repeat of last year’s tragic heatwave—which saw more than 1,000 deaths—Saudi authorities have introduced major upgrades in crowd and heat management. Over 250,000 personnel from 40 different agencies have been deployed to provide logistical, health, and emergency support.
In a bid to protect pilgrims from the sweltering sun, shaded areas across key Hajj zones have been increased by 50,000 square meters. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has also stationed thousands of additional medical workers, with more than 400 cooling stations placed strategically across the holy sites.
Technology is playing a central role in crowd control and safety monitoring. Artificial intelligence tools are being used to analyze real-time data, including video captured by a new fleet of drones. These systems help manage the movement of pilgrims more efficiently, ensuring swift responses to any emerging risks.
Authorities noted that most casualties last year occurred among unregistered pilgrims, who often missed access to cooled transport and tents. The government has since tightened monitoring and increased support for all attendees to ensure safer participation in one of Islam’s most important acts of worship.
