The Grand Mosque has switched on what they’re calling the world’s largest cooling system, getting ready for the upcoming Hajj 2025 season.
With Saudi Arabia’s extreme summer temperatures often exceeding 45°C, this preparation becomes essential for the millions of people who will be gathering there.
The system packs a serious punch with 155,000 tons of cooling capacity. It has two main stations handling all this cooling power – Al-Shamiya Station doing the heavy lifting with 120,000 tons, and Ajyad Station adding another 35,000 tons to the mix.
What’s impressive is how they’ve covered every single area of the mosque complex, including all the expansion zones that have been added over the years. Pilgrims can expect temperatures to stay between 22°C to 24°C, which is honestly a blessing when you’re dealing with Saudi summer heat that can easily hit 45°C or higher outside.
The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque isn’t just focusing on cooling though. They’ve integrated advanced air purification technology that removes 95% of airborne impurities. This is crucial when you have such massive crowds – the air quality becomes a real health concern without proper filtration systems.
Extreme heat in the region during peak summer months makes this infrastructure crucial for performing Hajj, particularly for elderly pilgrims and those with health conditions.
Even the flooring has been specially designed with Greek Thassos marble to stay cool underfoot.
