What is Halal Food and Certification?

In Muslim culture, halal food is considered suitable for consumption because it meets specified requirements. Throughout generations of Islamic practice, Halal has been governed by rules outlined in the Quran and the Hadith (the Prophet Muhammad’s example).

Halal is not only a concept about food. The term halal means “permissible” and refers to anything that falls under the teachings of Islam. Unlike halal as part of a codified system of sharia law, halal is part of the Islamic code of morals to guide Muslims’ actions and behavior.

Some observant Muslims may consider halal prescriptions religious obligations, but Australia is a secular country, and halal does not form part of the law. Halal food is a contested concept, as are many aspects of Islamic practice.

In the Muslim community, there is disagreement about whether stunning animals before slaughter produces halal meat. Both sides support their positions and draw on Islamic teachings and traditions. Disputes like this illustrate the importance of halal certification for Muslim consumers.

To begin with, certification helps local Muslims decide which products to buy. However, modern food processing and globalized markets make it difficult for Muslims in Australia to know how and where their food is produced.

The only way for consumers to avoid this uncertainty is to have a system that checks whether products are halal.

Halal certification is similar to other types of food certification and auditing. However, with food certification services, consumers can make informed decisions about the foods they consume, whether they are halal, kosher, gluten-free, or organic.
