New Zealand has included hijab in their official uniform for the very first time. This change is because they wanted to encourage more Muslim women to participate. In New Zealand, Zeena Ali is the first police member to wear a hijab as part of her uniform.
In late 2018, it was said by the New Zealand police to work in developing the hijab in the uniform. It was due to the request from police staff who had visited secondary schools.
Moreover, Constable Ali was invited to take part in the hijab developing process. She was the first person to request it as her part of the uniform. A picture of constable Zeena Ali was posted on Instagram by a police academy, saying that in New Zealand, the first police member to wear a specifically designed hijab is the constable Zeena Ali.
Ali said that when the Christ church terror attack happened, she was training to become the police. Zeena also said that if she were a fully trained constable, she would have helped victims and their families.
Constable Ali was born in Fiji and spent her childhood in New Zealand. She made her decision to join the police after the Christ church attack. She told the New Zealand Herald.
The post included that she was thrilled because the police went out of their way and ensured that she has the hijab on herself, which fulfills the health and safety requirements and personal needs.
According to the activist movement Global Citizen in their latest report, the recruits are often from highly diverse backgrounds in New Zealand.
