A dedicated shuttle service to and from the Rawdah area of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi began operating this week, offering accessible transport for elderly pilgrims and those with disabilities.
The service, announced by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, aims to ease movement for vulnerable worshipers visiting the Prophet’s Mosque.
Running from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, the shuttle follows a loop between the northern and southern gates of the mosque and nearby parking zones.
Vehicles are equipped with wheelchair ramps, extra seating space, and attendants trained to assist passengers with limited mobility.
Priority boarding is granted to passengers aged 60 and above and to those holding a special “Disability Assistance” permit.
The ministry has positioned staff at key pick-up points to guide passengers and manage queues.
Clear signage directs eligible pilgrims to shuttle stops, while on-board audio announcements in Arabic and English keep riders informed of upcoming drop-off locations.
Early feedback from pilgrims has been positive. Many older visitors praised the comfort and convenience, saying the shuttle removed the need to navigate busy pedestrian routes.
Authorities will monitor usage and gather suggestions before making the service permanent and potentially extending it to other high-traffic areas around the holy sites.
