Authorities in New Lynn, New Zealand, are investigating a fire at the Imam Reza Mosque on Astley Ave, which police believe was intentionally set.
CCTV footage reportedly captured an individual breaking into the mosque just before 1 a.m. on Tuesday and igniting a fire.
Detective Inspector Callum McNeill, leading the investigation, confirmed that both police and fire investigators quickly determined the fire was deliberate.
The fire continued to smolder for nearly eight hours before it became visible from the street and was reported to emergency services.
“Police are pursuing strong leads to locate the individual responsible,” McNeill said. While the motive is still unclear, investigators are exploring all possibilities, including any potential hate-related intentions. “We are working closely with the Muslim community to provide support and reassurance during this time.”
To bolster community safety, authorities have increased patrols around Auckland’s mosques in the days following the incident. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the police, referencing file number 241105/3764.
A smashed glass door at the back of the mosque is believed to have been the point of entry. The police are asking any witnesses to come forward to assist in identifying the suspect.
