On Wednesday, Pakistani professor Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary was awarded the 2021 Mustafa Prize Laureate for his services in bio-organic chemistry.

The Mustafa Prize is a top science and technology award given every two years to deserving researchers and scientists from the Islamic world.

The award is divided into four categories: Life Science and Technology and Medicine, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Information and Communication Science and Technology, and all fields of Science and Technology.

The prize is regarded as the Nobel Prize of the Muslim world and has been established as a symbol of international scientific excellence since 2012.

As many as five scientists have been awarded the 2021 Mustafa Prize, each from Pakistan, Iran, Bangladesh, Lebanon, and Morocco in their respective fields of study.

According to the Mustafa Prize website, the laureates in each category will be awarded a cash prize of $500.00 and a medal and a certificate.

Prof Dr. Iqbal Choudhary is a world-renowned medicinal chemist and the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) director at the University of Karachi. He has published 1,175 research papers in the fields of organic and bio-organic chemistry in international journals, 76 books, and 40 chapters in books published by major US and European press and securing 40 US patents.

His work has been cited 27,407 times by researchers worldwide, and his h-index is 70.

Dr. Iqbal, who also holds DSc, Ph.D., and CChem degrees, has been awarded Hilal-e-Imtiaz, Sitara-e-Imtiaz, and Tamgha-e-Imtiaz by various Pakistani governments.

He has been repeatedly selected by several renowned academies such as the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, the Islamic World Academy of Sciences, the Pakistani Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society of Chemistry, and the Chemical Society of Pakistan.

Previously Prof Iqbal has also received the International Khwarizmi Award from the President of Iran, the ECO Award in Education from the President of Azerbaijan, and the COMSTECH Award in Chemistry given by the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

In 2004, he was awarded the prestigious title of distinguished national professor by the Higher Education Commission and meritorious professor by the University of Karachi in 2013.
