Background

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that when the Prophet ﷺ congratulated a man on his marriage, he would say this dua. It is short, complete, and asks for three things: blessing for the person, blessing upon them, and a bond between the spouses rooted in goodness.

Understanding the Words

  • Baraka means growth and lasting good, not just happiness. You are asking Allah to make the marriage a source of ongoing benefit in this life and the next.
  • Jama’a baynakuma fi khayr asks that the couple stay united in goodness: in faith, in character, and in family life.

Saying It to a Couple

The narration addresses the groom, so it uses the singular. When speaking to both spouses, scholars permit the dual form:

Barakallahu lakuma, wa baraka ‘alaykuma, wa jama’a baynakuma fi khayr.

Both forms are acceptable in practice.

Allahumma inni as’aluka khayraha wa khayra ma jabaltaha ‘alayh, wa a’udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma jabaltaha ‘alayh.

“O Allah, I ask You for her good and the good of what You have created in her, and I seek refuge in You from her evil and the evil of what You have created in her.”
