Dua for Forgiveness: As a human, we all made mistakes and sins. It is impossible for anyone never to make a mistake or remain free of corruption.
Islam is aware of this and strongly encourages Muslims to ask for forgiveness. Forgiveness is seen as one of the critical aspects of Islam, as found in many verses in Al Quran.
We are taught not only to seeking forgiveness from Allah but also to forgive others as well.
Forgiveness is mentioned many times in the verses of the Quran, one of it in Surah Ali Imran (134): “Those who spend in ease and adversity, and suppress their anger, and excuse [the faults of] the people, and Allah loves the virtuous.”
This verse explained to us that forgiving others is one of the keys for us to become beloved servants of Allah, and those who forgive others are promised God’s forgiveness as well.
This verse also contains the meaning that someone wrongs us; we should swallow our anger. But that alone is not enough because we can control our anger but still hold grudges in our hearts.
To avoid this, we are encouraged to forgive and forget the faults of others. This verse also teaches us that the highest level of forgiveness is when we answer the faults of others with kindness.
There are two kinds of forgiveness taught in Islam: Allah’s forgiveness and human forgiveness. We need both of them since we make mistakes in our relations with Allah, just like we did in our connections with others.
In the Quran, it is repeated many times that Allah is Most Merciful; one of it is in the Surah At-Taghabun (14): “But if you pardon, overlook, and forgive their faults, then Allah is truly All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
We can ask forgiveness from Allah by reciting a simple yet powerful dua, “Astaghfirullah” (I seek forgiveness from Allah). Our Prophet Muhammad recited this at least 100 times a day.
As Muslims, it is essential to recognize our mistakes or sin as soon as we commit them. After we realize our wrongdoings, we should ask forgiveness from Allah SWT and other human beings.
From there, we can improve ourselves by sincerely promise not to repeat the mistake or sin.
