Jabal al-Nour is known as the Mount of Light, which stands as a mountain of significance for Muslims all over the world in the heart of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. It is the mountain where the Holy Prophet (PBUH) revealed his first revelation from Angel Jibreel that marked the beginning of Prophethood.

At 642 meters, this mountain stands tall and proud, a symbol of Islamic significance. It is located 3 km to the east of Holy Kaaba. The cave of Hira where the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) received his first revelation is located on the side of the mountain and is 2 meters high and 3 meters wide

The significance of Jabal al-Nour goes beyond its impressive stature. It’s the place where the divine revelation chose to make its captivating start before the Messenger of Islam. Here, on this peak, the spirit of the holy Qur’an descended upon Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon him), revealing its first verse: “Recite in the name of your Lord who created (all creatures)” [Surat Al-Alaq 1].

Along with being a sacred Pilgrimage place for Muslims worldwide, it is also known for its tourist designation. Each year millions of Muslims visit this place to see the place where Islam’s history started and offer their prayers.

History of Jabal Al Nour

Jabal al Nour is located in Saudi Arabia near Mecca in the region of Hejaz with the cave of Hira at the top which is approximately around 20 meters walk to and from the cave.

The history goes back to the pre-Islamic days when Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was a merchant and his bustling life made him realize the importance of finding the true light. He was known as Al Sadiq and Al Amin from the start. At the age of 40 years, Muhammad (PBUH) began to mediate in the cave of Hira or Jabal al nour

The cave of Hira, a humble and peaceful place, gave the Prophet Muhammad the space to contemplate away from the busy streets of Saudi Arabia. It was within these sacred places that he received the first revelations of the Holy Quran during the month of Ramadan in 610 CE.

The Ideal Time to Visit Jabal Al Noor

For those planning to visit Jabal al-Nour, timing is key. It’s best to choose the off-peak season to avoid crowds and to fully absorb the spiritual atmosphere. Early mornings and late afternoons are the prime times for exploration, as the temperatures are more bearable during these hours.

The early morning hours, after the Fajr prayer, are particularly recommended for climbing the mountain. The cooler temperatures and the longer nights make for a more comfortable experience. Keeping in mind the fact that the weather in Mecca is hot, it is advisable to carry enough water supply along with a comfortable clothing 

Also, it’s advised to check the forecast of weather on your visit day beforehand. Jabal al-Nour, with its rich history and spiritual significance, awaits all those who seek enlightenment and connection with the roots of Islam.
