Work on the Kaaba’s Kiswah for Hijri year 1449 (2027) has begun at the King Abdulaziz Complex for Holy Kaaba Kiswah in the Umm Al-Joud district of Makkah Al-Mukarramah — just days after the 1448 AH covering was installed on the Kaaba at Masjid al-Haram (Grand Mosque).

A Year-Long Process

Each Kiswah takes up to 10 months to complete. Nearly 200 skilled specialists, including embroiderers, weavers, technicians, designers, and tailors, are involved in its creation.

This year, the 1448 AH Kiswah was produced by approximately 150 Saudi craftsmen who dedicated nearly 11 months to its completion.

The cycle of production begins almost immediately after each installation, continuing until the following Muharram.

What Goes Into the Kiswah

Each Kiswah is meticulously crafted using approximately 670 kilograms of black-dyed raw silk.

It is then adorned with Quranic verses embroidered using around 120 kilograms of 21-carat gold thread and approximately 100 kilograms of silver thread.

The final covering comprises 47 intricately embroidered pieces of luxurious black silk, hand-assembled to create a stunning masterpiece.

The Kiswah, once completed, weighs approximately 1,415 kilograms. It comprises two complete layers: an outer layer crafted from black embroidered silk and an inner lining made of off-white cotton.

When the New Kiswah Will Be Installed

The ceremonial changing of the Kiswah was moved to 1 Muharram, the first day of the Islamic New Year, to better align with preservation and logistical needs.

The 1449 AH Kiswah is expected to be installed at the start of Muharram 1449, which falls in 2027.
