Saudi Arabia has introduced a new taxi service called “Makkah Taxi” in the holy city of Makkah to improve transportation for both residents and millions of pilgrims who visit the city annually.

The new taxi service was officially launched on January 13th, 2025, in a ceremony attended by key dignitaries, Prince Saud bin Mishal, Deputy Emir of Makkah, Dr. Tawfiq Al-Rabiah, Minister of Hajj and Umrah, and Saleh Al-Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistics.

Key Features of Makkah Taxi

The Makkah Taxi service introduces several features aimed at ensuring convenience, accessibility, and efficiency for users:

  1. Comfort and Modern Features: The taxis are expected to be equipped with modern amenities to ensure a comfortable ride. While details of specific features have not been disclosed, previous transportation projects in the Kingdom have emphasized clean, climate-controlled vehicles with well-trained drivers.
  2. 24/7 Service: The taxis will be available round the clock, providing uninterrupted transportation for residents and pilgrims.
  3. Designated Pickup Points: A total of 47 specific locations have been identified across Makkah, with a particular focus on areas around the Grand Mosque (Masjid al-Haram). These points will make it easier for people to find taxis, especially during busy times like prayer hours, Hajj, and Umrah seasons.
  4. Fleet Expansion: The project will gradually expand its fleet of taxis. By the end of 2025, there will be approximately 1,800 Makkah Taxis in operation, ensuring more availability and reducing waiting times for users.

The Makkah Taxi initiative is also expected to boost local tourism and contribute to economic growth by creating job opportunities for residents. Many drivers and support staff are expected to be hired locally, ensuring that the project benefits the city’s economy.
