The footage, which circulated widely online, depicts a glowing cube-shaped structure illuminated with bright lights and visuals, accompanied by a choreographed dance performance.
Observers linked the performance to Muslim rituals performed around the Kaaba in Mecca’s Grand Mosque, drawing sharp criticism from viewers.

In response to the controversy, a Saudi anti-rumor authority clarified that the structure was not a replica of the Kaaba but consisted of mirrors displaying digitally processed visuals.
The authority dismissed allegations of disrespect, stating, “There are many cube-shaped structures globally, like New York’s Apple Store and the Berlin Cube, yet these comparisons are rarely drawn.”
The Riyadh Season, an annual festival featuring global performers and athletes, is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader initiative to expand its sports and entertainment sector. However, these liberal reforms have drawn criticism from conservative groups, who view the kingdom as the custodian of Islam’s sacred sites.
Earlier this year, the Mukaab project in Riyadh, a massive gold cube structure, faced similar backlash. The $50 billion development, expected to be 400 meters in height, width, and length, was also criticized for its resemblance to the Kaaba.
