Actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has drawn backlash after a viral video showed him making inflammatory remarks directed toward Muslims at a political rally in West Bengal.
The incident has escalated tensions as the country approaches the Lok Sabha elections.
In the video, Chakraborty appears to respond to an earlier statement by opposition leader Humayun Kabir, who made controversial remarks involving Hindu-Muslim dynamics in the state.
Chakraborty, addressing a crowd at a BJP membership drive, stated, “If they think they can challenge us, we will respond,” making references to violent actions and asserting his party’s determination to secure political power.
Kabir, a local leader, had been previously reprimanded by the Indian Election Commission for statements perceived as inciting communal tensions, saying that “Muslims would retaliate if their community was targeted.” Chakraborty’s response appeared to take aim at Kabir’s rhetoric, calling on the BJP to act “decisively.”
Chakraborty also accused the West Bengal government of obstructing the Hindu community’s voting rights, intensifying criticism of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s administration.
The 74-year-old actor previously served in the Rajya Sabha, nominated by Banerjee’s All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) before joining the BJP in 2021. His recent comments have sparked heated discussions nationwide, highlighting the polarized political climate leading up to the elections.
