Tajikistan’s top Muslim cleric, Sayeedmukarram Abduqodirzoda, was injured by stabbing in an attack outside a mosque in Dushanbe, the capital, on Wednesday, according to the interior ministry.
The ministry reported that Abduqodirzoda was stabbed by an individual with “hooligan motives” after a prayer service.
He sustained minor injuries and was released after a medical checkup.
Authorities have detained the attacker and initiated a criminal investigation.
Abduqodirzoda, 61, has led the Islamic Council of Ulema, Tajikistan’s highest Islamic authority, since 2010.
The country, with a population of around 10 million, predominantly follows the Hanafi school of Sunni Islam.

Assalamu alaikum.Very sad to hear about this dastardly act. This is the extreme act of cowardliness. This will do more harm to its perpetrators than to Islam as a religion. The local Muslim population must give cover to such old religious heads as they give protection to VIPs. These religious heads are gems of the community and must be protected and given all assistance so that they can lead the community without any fear. Let Allah give him long healthy life and patience and also show the right path to his attacker and his sponsors. Aameen.
