Saudi Arabia has described the sanctity of the Two Holy Mosques in Makkah and Medina as a “red line,” which will not be crossed by anyone, regardless of nationality.

Abdul Rahman Al Sudais, head of the General Presidency for Affairs of the Grand Mosque and Prophet’s Mosque, said the sanctity of the Two Holy Mosques is a red line for Saudi Arabia.

The kingdom has absolute control over the holy cities and sites, so anyone violating or transgressing this sanctity will receive no leniency, Al Sudais said.

The president warned against breaking related rules, stressing the importance of strictly adhering to them.

“Deterrent penalties must deter such security crimes,”

Al Sudais said.

A Saudi citizen was arrested for facilitating the illegal entry of a non-Muslim journalist holding US citizenship into Mecca, the holiest Islamic city, in violation of a ban on non-Muslims.

An investigation into the journalist’s case has been referred to the kingdom’s public prosecution.
