Authorities have confirmed that Sunday, July 7, will be a paid public holiday for both public and private sector employees to mark the Islamic New Year, according to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation.

The Islamic New Year, or Hijri New Year, signifies the beginning of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar.

While it is expected to be observed on Sunday, the exact date will be confirmed by the country’s moon-sighting committee, as Islamic holidays depend on the lunar cycle.

The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources announced on Monday that the paid holiday for the public sector would coincide with the first day of Muharram.

Typically, public and private sector employees receive the same number of holidays each year.

Unlike Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha, the Islamic New Year is generally a day of reflection rather than celebration, with no specific religious observances prescribed.
