Tajikistan’s top Muslim cleric, Sayeedmukarram Abduqodirzoda, was injured by stabbing in an attack outside a mosque in Dushanbe, the capital, on Wednesday, according to the interior ministry.
The ministry reported that Abduqodirzoda was stabbed by an individual with “hooligan motives” after a prayer service.
He sustained minor injuries and was released after a medical checkup.
Authorities have detained the attacker and initiated a criminal investigation.
Abduqodirzoda, 61, has led the Islamic Council of Ulema, Tajikistan’s highest Islamic authority, since 2010.
The country, with a population of around 10 million, predominantly follows the Hanafi school of Sunni Islam.
