Saudi Mosques Urge Worshipers to Pray at Home Due to Severe Thunderstorm

As heavy rain and lightning swept through the area, the traditional call to prayer (Adhan) was adjusted, with the Muadhin announcing “Sallu fi Buyutikum” (Pray at your homes) instead of the usual “Hayya Alas Salah” (Come to Prayer).

This decision is based on a tradition reported by Abdullah Ibn Abbas (RA), a companion of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

On a similar occasion of heavy rain, Ibn Abbas (RA) instructed the Muadhin to alter the Adhan, urging people to stay home for their prayers. When questioned, he referenced the Prophet’s (PBUH) own actions, saying, “He (Prophet PBUH), who is better than I, did it.”

The change in the Adhan highlights the importance of safety during dangerous weather conditions.

Ibn Abbas (RA) emphasized that while the Jummah prayer is obligatory, the safety and well-being of the worshipers should not be jeopardized by forcing them to navigate through hazardous conditions like mud and slippery surfaces.

This measure shows the practical approach in Islam, where religious duties are balanced with concerns for the safety and health of the community, particularly during extreme weather events.
