Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — Saudi Arabia will prohibit the sale and consumption of alcohol during the 2034 FIFA World Cup, the Kingdom’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, Prince Khalid bin Bandar Al Saud, confirmed in a recent interview.

The policy, which applies to all venues—including hotels and fan zones—marks a bold departure from typical World Cup practices and underscores Saudi Arabia’s adherence to its strict cultural and legal norms, even as it prepares to host one of the world’s largest sporting events.

During a discussion with British media, Prince Khalid emphasized that Saudi Arabia’s alcohol ban would remain absolute throughout the tournament. The decision aligns with Saudi law, which criminalizes the sale, possession, and consumption of alcohol, with exceptions only for diplomatic missions under tightly controlled conditions.

The announcement comes as Saudi Arabia emerges as the sole bidder to host the 2034 World Cup, following FIFA’s expedited bidding timeline. The Gulf nation has pledged to deliver a “unique and immersive” tournament experience while respecting its Islamic values.

In Qatar’s 2022 World Cup, alcohol sales were restricted to select fan zones, but Saudi Arabia’s outright prohibition goes further. Analysts suggest the Kingdom may offset this by emphasizing alternative attractions, such as cultural festivals, family-friendly events, and innovative hospitality offerings.

Saudi Arabia’s strict alcohol laws are rooted in its conservative interpretation of Islam, though the country has pursued sweeping social and economic reforms under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030 agenda. The World Cup policy signals that certain cultural red lines will remain intact despite the Kingdom’s modernization drive.

FIFA has yet to comment publicly on the ban, but the organization has historically adapted to host nations’ regulations. Supporters praise Saudi Arabia for prioritizing cultural integrity.

With a decade to prepare, Saudi Arabia is accelerating infrastructure projects, including stadium construction, transportation upgrades, and accommodation expansions. The ban on alcohol is expected to streamline security planning, reducing risks associated with public intoxication.

The 2034 World Cup will test Saudi Arabia’s ability to balance global expectations with local values.
