On Tuesday, firearms officers were called to a fight in Terminal 2. The video, which quickly spread online, shows a uniformed officer holding a taser over a man lying face down, striking him twice. Other officers can be heard ordering bystanders stay back.
Reports indicate the man subjected to the assault is a British Pakistani.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have reported themselves to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) and have relieved the officer involved from duty. The incident escalated when three officers were attacked during an arrest, resulting in one female officer sustaining a broken nose. Four men were taken into custody on suspicion of assault and affray.
Assistant Chief Constable Wasim Chaudhry recognized the public’s concerns, stating that the use of such force is not common practice. A protest outside Rochdale Police Station saw hundreds of people demanding an end to police brutality.
National Black Police Association President Andy George and Mayor Andy Burnham called the footage distressing to watch. Home Office Minister Dame Diana Johnson has requested a comprehensive report from GMP.
The IOPC will review GMP’s referral to decide on the next steps. GMP has committed to engaging with the community to address concerns and strengthen community relations.
