CAIRO – The decline in Sales of McDonald’s Egypt due to the boycott campaign by Pro-Palestinian customers over the company’s support to Israel
The giant American fast food chain is facing a major crisis after the boycott campaign was launched in October 2023 by the Pro-Palestinian supporters. The world-famous fast food chain McDonald’s in Egypt has witnessed a staggering 70% drop in its sales after it was revealed that McDonald’s Israel was providing free food and huge discounts to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The Israeli forces have launched various airstrikes on Gaza that claimed more than 2000 innocent Palestinian lives since October 2023. The horrific war has resulted in thousands of injuries and huge destruction throughout the area
The news of the war sparked outrage and condemnation from the Egyptian population who expressed their utmost solidarity with their Palestinian brothers and sisters.
Pro Palestinian, Social media users called for boycotting companies that support Israel, and McDonald was one of them. The campaign resulted in a decreased number of customers for McDonald’s with the majority of the branches almost empty
Several McDonalds franchise in different countries issued a statement stating that it does not support Israel and even announced aid donation to the affected Palestinians
However, the efforts to convince the boycotters went in vain as the Pro Palestinian supporters continued to pressure the company to cut ties with McDonald’s Israel. The campaign was not only confined to a single country but spread to other countries in the region which includes Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, etc
McDonald’s in Egypt has been operating since 1994 and has been one of the most popular and profitable fast food chains in the country.
The boycott campaign has posed serious challenges to the largest food chain McDonalds. However, the company has not yet commented on the impact of the boycott on the business or its plans for the future regarding the Egyptian market
