The judiciary said on Monday that two people convicted of desecrating the Koran and insulting the Prophet Mohammad had been executed.
As reported on the judiciary’s Mizan Online website, Sadrollah Fazeli Zarei and Youssef Mehrdad were hanged in the morning for “insulting Prophet Mohammad and burning the Koran”.
Mizan stated that one accused had admitted to the insults committed on his social media account in March 2021.
Rights groups outside of Iran frequently accuse such confessions of being ‘forced’, arguing that they were often obtained by duress.
According to rights organizations like Amnesty International, Iran executes more people yearly than any other country besides China.
According to two rights groups, 75 per cent more people were hanged in the country in 2022 than the year before.
