France Bans Olympic 2024 Athletes from Wearing Hijab

The decision has sparked controversy internationally, as it touches on broader issues of religious freedom, secularism, and individual rights.

Government’s Stance

The French government, which has a long-standing tradition of laïcité (secularism), argues that the ban is in line with the country’s secular values and aims to maintain neutrality in public spaces.

French Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra stated that the ban ensures that athletes represent the country without any religious symbols, thus promoting unity and neutrality.

Supporters view it as a violation of individual freedoms and an act of discrimination against Muslim women.

The ban has drawn criticism from various human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, which labeled it as an infringement on religious freedom.

Impact on Athletes

The ban specifically affects Muslim female athletes who wear the hijab as part of their religious practice.

Several athletes and advocacy groups have expressed their disappointment, stating that the ban could discourage Muslim women from participating in sports at the highest level and represents a setback for inclusivity and diversity in athletics.

Previously, France has implemented bans on wearing religious symbols in public schools and full-face veils in public spaces.
