We have been getting a lot of questions about the invalidation of wudu that leads to the invalidation of Salah.
People usually believe that a laugh can break the wudu, but the majority of them do not know the reason and evidence behind it.
We decided to go ahead and take a look at the fatwa.
Can Laughing Break Wudu?
No, laughing does not break Wudu, but it breaks the Salah.
All the scholars agree that laughing outside of Salah, or even when one is getting ready for it will not invalidate Wudu.
Evidence
- As per Ibn Al-Mundhir in his Al-Awsat, 1/166.
- As per An-Nawawi in his Al-Majmu`, 2/61.
- Fat-h Al-Bari, 1/280.
These two fatwas clearly state that launching can’t break wudu. However, in the same fatwa, it has been stated that while praying a laugh can break Salah.
Jabir ibn `Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated by Ad-Daraqutni, 51 and by Al-Bukhari in a Mu‘allaq report said if someone laughs during prayer, it does have to repeat the prayer but there is no need to make Wudu.
Bottom Line
Laughing in this refers to laughing out loud, that people can hear. This is to be noted that there is a difference between a smile and a laugh, we’re taking laughing into account, which means laughing so loud that everyone can hear it.
However, Shaykh Al-Islam has said in Sharah Al-Umdah 1/324 that none of the companies performed Wudu after laughing which is enough for us to take it as evidence.
Simply put, laughing doesn’t break Wudu, no matter if you’re praying or not.
