Bangladeshi Islamic scholar Nasrullah, 35, died in the Houthi attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Saturday. He was travelling from Bangladesh to Makkah for Umrah and was waiting at the airport during a transit stop, according to his family. Saudi media named him as Nasrullah Al-Badr.

Al Arabiya and other outlets released footage that purportedly shows him inside the airport shortly before the attack. Soon after, an explosion struck the passenger terminal, sending flames and thick smoke into the area.

Who Was Nasrullah?

His full name was Hafiz Mufti Mohammad Nasrullah Badarpuri. He came from Badarpur village in Dhalua union, Nangalkot upazila, Cumilla. He was the son of Hafiz Maulana Mohammad Ullah and Jahanara Begum.

Nasrullah worked as assistant deputy director (assistant muhtamim) at Jamia Arabia Darul Uloom Madrasa in Kamrangirchar, Dhaka.

His brother-in-law, Maulana Mohammad Nasir Uddin, said Nasrullah was part of a group of 45 Bangladeshi pilgrims on a two-week Umrah trip. He was due to return on October 24.

He leaves behind his wife and three children: Jamil Hasan, 7, Nabila Akter, 5, and Jawad, 2.

Riyadh Airport Attack Death Toll

Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation said Sunday that 12 people died and 309 were injured. The dead included four Saudi citizens and eight foreign residents.

The toll rose to 13 when the Indian Embassy in Riyadh said one of its nationals had died of injuries from the attack.

Coalition Response

Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki, spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition backing Yemen’s internationally recognised government, blamed the Houthis. He called the attack a “full-fledged war crime.”

He said the coalition’s Joint Forces Command would respond “firmly and in accordance with international humanitarian law and its customary rules.”

Saudi Arabia–Houthi Tensions

Hostilities between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis have escalated since July, including strikes on civilian aviation facilities and energy infrastructure.

Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition against the Houthis since March 2015. The group has held the capital Sanaa and several other provinces since September 2014.
