VARANASI, INDIA — A portion of late hockey Olympian Mohammed Shahid’s family home was demolished by municipal authorities on Sunday during a road-widening project along the Kachery-Sandaha route.
The demolition has sparked protests from the Padma Shri awardee’s family, who claim they received no compensation and now face displacement.
The administration stated the action only affected properties where compensation had been settled, but Shahid’s sister-in-law Nazneen disputed this.
“We have nowhere else to go with our family,” she said.
Family member Mushtaq added that the household, preparing for an October wedding, owns no other property and risks being left homeless.
The incident drew political condemnation, with Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai calling the demolition an insult to India’s sporting heritage.
“The BJP government has demolished the house of Padma Shri Mohammed Shahid. This was not just a house, but a symbol of the nation’s sporting legacy,” he stated.
Mohammed Shahid, who passed away in 2016, was a celebrated member of India’s gold medal-winning 1980 Olympic hockey team and received the Padma Shri in 1986.
