The crescent moon that signals the beginning of the Islamic lunar month Muharram has been officially sighted in Saudi Arabia on the evening of Wednesday, June 25.
As a result, Thursday, June 26, 2025, will be observed as 1 Muharram 1447 AH, the first day of the Islamic New Year.
The moon-sighting committee under the Saudi Supreme Court confirmed multiple credible sightings of the hilal (new crescent), in accordance with traditional Islamic practice that determines each lunar month.
Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam, during which warfare is forbidden, and spiritual deeds are highly encouraged.
It is a time for prayer, charity, self-reflection, and commemorating key historical events—particularly Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, which marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) in Karbala, a pivotal moment in Islamic history.
Many Muslims will spend the early days of Muharram fasting, attending religious gatherings, and renewing spiritual commitments for the year ahead.
