A Muslim police officer was shot and injured by a gunman on a motorcycle while returning home from evening prayers at a mosque in Thailand’s Yarang district on Monday night.
The officer, identified as Pol Capt Abdulhadee Yuerae, 52, is a deputy inspector at Mayo police station in Pattani. The incident occurred around 8:20 p.m. as Capt Abdulhadee was riding his motorcycle home after prayers at a mosque in tambon Pitumudee, according to Yarang police superintendent Pol Col Warin Wanthongchai.
As Capt Abdulhadee traveled along the road, two men on a motorcycle approached him from behind. The passenger on the motorcycle opened fire, causing him to lose control and veer off the road. One bullet struck his mobile phone in his shirt pocket, while another grazed his cheek.
Despite his injuries, Capt Abdulhadee managed to draw his weapon and fire three shots at his attackers, possibly injuring one. The assailants quickly fled the scene, leaving behind five spent bullet casings.
A passerby assisted the wounded officer, transporting him to Yarang Hospital for treatment.
Police are now reviewing surveillance footage from nearby cameras along the suspects’ likely escape route and monitoring local hospitals, as the injured attacker may seek medical attention.
This incident marks the third recent attack on police officers returning home from mosques in Thailand’s southern region.
In another case, a retired police officer and prayer leader was fatally shot outside his home after mosque prayers in Yala’s Muang district on October 29.
