Marcus Edwards, 44, filmed himself committing the act on August 11 and posted online that he would “get away with it” and even threatened to vandalize a mosque every day, according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
Edwards, who lives on Gillingham Road, was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court after pleading guilty to charges of criminal damage to property valued under £5,000 and racially/religiously aggravated criminal damage.
Kris Venkatasami, Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS South East, condemned the attack, calling it “abhorrent” and “exceptionally distressing” for the local Muslim community, especially during a time when they were already feeling vulnerable due to recent events across the country.
“Edwards arrogantly believed he could evade justice and taunted that he would ‘get away’ with targeting a place of worship,” Venkatasami said. “Within five days, he was identified, convicted, and has now faced the full force of the law.”
