The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported that the attacker poured a flammable liquid on Rao before setting him on fire and fleeing the scene.

A witness told Canadian news outlet Global News that she was inside the store when she saw a man engulfed in flames running and screaming from the back.

She learned from a relative of the shop owner that the incident occurred during a robbery attempt.

The police have released an image of the suspect, believed to be around 25 years old, along with a photo of his white Mini Cooper.

The concerns regarding the connection between the murder of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar and Rahat Rao’s attack is growing as authorities are thinking that the attacks are linked. Because Rao also participated in the protest in favor of Nijjar when he was killed.

The RCMP had previously advised Rao to enhance his security measures due to concerns about his safety.
